When a rewire is necessary — older properties and homes showing electrical deterioration are at higher risk. Signs to watch for include persistent circuit trips, burning or scorching around sockets, discoloured wiring insulation, fabric or rubber-coated cables, frequent flickering lights and a lack of RCD protection. If your wiring dates from the 1960s–90s or you have aluminium wiring, a full rewiring survey is prudent.
How I work — every job starts with a detailed survey and a clear plan for socket and light placement, consumer unit specification and cable routing. I remove redundant cabling, install new circuits and a modern consumer unit with RCD/RCBO protection, complete all electrical testing to BS 7671 and provide final Part P certification. Where plaster chasing is required I take care to re-instate finishes neatly and keep disruption to a minimum.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Timescales depend on property size, access and whether walls need chasing or plaster re-instatement. A small semi will be quicker than a large period property; I provide a clear timeline at survey and work in planned phases to reduce disruption.
